The Grand Hotels of the White Mountains

The saga of hotels, inns and taverns is integral to the
history of  New Hampshire’s White Mountains.  Early settlers
were quick to realize the potential value of offering lodging
to teamsters, explorers and naturalists.  As the region’s
fame spread, businessmen and prosperous farmers began to
visit the mountains.  When travel to the “Crystal Hills”
became easier, the area blossomed into a playground for the
well-to-do.

On April 18th at 6:30pm at The Seasons at Attitash function
room, local historian, David Emerson, will present the story
of the Grand Hotels with emphasis on the hotels of
Intervale.  Join us for the history and lore of this bygone
era.  A brief business meeting will be held prior to David’s
presentation.  Agenda items may be forwarded on or before
Saturday, April 7th to President, Bert George, at
president@bartletthistory.org or PO Box 514, Bartlett, NH.
Light refreshments will be served following the program.
You will not want to miss this “all history” evening.

The “Days before Yesterday” Quilt

The Society has commissioned member, Greta George, to
create a quilt to be used as a fundraiser for 2007.  It
features thirty-five squares of antique postcard photo
scenes from the villages of Bartlett.  The queen-size quilt
has yellow squares with borders of green and beige.  The
squares contain such landmarks as Harmony Acres; Morgan
Farms; Cave Mountain; The Howard; Sawyer’s Rock; Hart’s
Ledge; Storyland; the Bartlett Village and Glen railroad
stations; the Eastman House; Mountain Home Cabins; The
Bartlett House; and many more.

The quilt, which Greta calls “Days before Yesterday,” will be
raffled by the Society.  The proceeds of this raffle will assist
with the funding of the many projects and activities
scheduled for this year.  We ask for your support of our
programs by purchasing and/or selling the tickets enclosed
($5 each or 5 for $20). Please return the proceeds and the
completed tickets to PO Box 514; to one of the officers; or,
to the BHS office any Saturday between noon and 2pm.
Your participation is vital to the success of this fundraiser.
This is a wonderfully historic chronicle of days past in
Bartlett and must be seen to be appreciated.  We urge you
to stop by the BHS office any Saturday to view it.

Bartlett History Challenge:
The hotels, inns, taverns, cottages and cabins of Bartlett

Our theme for this quarter seems to have evolved around
the  lodging accommodations of the 19th and 20th centuries
in the villages of Bartlett (the villages were previously
known as Lower Bartlett, Bartlett Center and Upper
Bartlett).  Below is a list of the names given to 43 of those
establishments.

The challenge is two-part.  The first part is to locate which
village each was/is located.  Upon completion of this
portion of the challenge, entries should be submitted to the
Bartlett Historical Society Office at PO Box 514, Bartlett,
03812, or dropped of at the BHS office in Glen any Saturday
between noon and 2pm.  Correct entries will be notified
and invited to participate in part 2.  The second part is to
name the specific location of the building within the village;
i.e., the Glen railroad station was/is located at the end of
Station Street in Glen.  This portion of the challenge must
be returned to the Historical Society as above on or before
Saturday, June 2nd at 2pm.  Good luck all.
